From Steady Paychecks to Passion Projects: Taking the Leap into Entrepreneurship
Share
For years, I've lived a double life: a steady corporate job during the day and a thriving home baking business during evenings and weekends. My baking business was my creative outlet, a space where I could express myself and connect with people through the joy of food.
The business was doing well—better than I ever imagined. I was always busy and the feedback that poured in was overwhelmingly positive. Friends and family often encouraged me to pursue it full-time, but the idea of leaving a steady paycheck felt daunting. After all, my corporate job provided stability, predictability, and a sense of security.
Yet, deep down, I knew I wanted more.
When the opportunity came to open the Pink Cookie Truck, it seemed like a natural transition. If I was going to take my business to the next level, then it was only natural to do so by being able to offer my sweets to a larger audience.
Taking the Leap
As fun as the addition of the Pink Cookie Truck was, continuing to juggle my double life was proving more and more difficult. When my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic bone cancer, it felt like the world came to a standstill. I took a hard look at my life and realized that it was just too short to not do what you love.
This past week, I finally decided to take the leap. I put in my two weeks' notice and now I am leaving the corporate world not only to focus on expanding my baking business but also to pursue another long-held dream: launching my own fashion e-commerce store.
It wasn’t an impulsive decision. I spent months weighing the pros and cons, building financial buffers, and creating a clear vision for what I wanted to achieve. But even with all the preparation, I was—and still am—scared.
There’s a unique kind of anxiety that comes with leaving a steady paycheck. Questions like “What if I fail?” and “Did I make the right decision?” linger in my mind, especially on tough days.
Why I Did It Anyway
Despite the fear, I couldn’t ignore the voice inside me that said, “You’re ready.”
My successful baking business gave me the confidence to believe in myself. I’d already proven that I could create something people loved and were willing to pay for. The thought of scaling it further, of having the freedom to dedicate all my energy to my passions, was too exciting to ignore.
And then there was the dream of starting my fashion e-commerce store. Fashion has always been a huge part of my life, and the idea of building a brand that reflects my style and values felt like the next natural step.
Navigating the Transition
Leaving my corporate job isn't going to be easy. I am feeling the pressure of knowing that my days are numbered. There are days when I feel on top of the world, and there are days when I’m consumed by doubt. The transition from a predictable 9-to-5 to the unpredictability of entrepreneurship is an emotional rollercoaster.
But here’s what keeps me grounded:
- The Support of My Customers: Hearing how much people love my baked goods and seeing positive reviews for my fashion store remind me that I’m on the right path.
- The Freedom to Create: I will finally have the time to fully immerse myself in my passions, and that’s a gift I don’t take for granted.
- The Bigger Picture: I remind myself that growth takes time. Success isn’t linear, and every small step forward is worth celebrating.
What I’ve Learned So Far
- Fear Is Normal: It’s okay to feel scared. Fear doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong—it means you’re doing something bold.
- Believe in Your Track Record: My years of running a successful baking business gave me the foundation to believe in myself. If I could make it work part-time, why not full-time?
- Take It Day by Day: Entrepreneurship can feel overwhelming, so I’ve learned to focus on one task, one goal, and one win at a time.
A Work in Progress
Am I still scared? Yes. Am I still anxious? Absolutely. But I’m also proud. Proud that I taking a chance on myself, proud that I’m chasing dreams that truly matter to me, and proud that I’m building a life that aligns with my passions.
If you’re thinking about making a similar leap, here’s my advice: trust your gut, lean on your strengths, and remind yourself that it’s okay to feel uncertain. The path to your dreams isn’t supposed to be easy—but it’s worth it.
